Like a Local-New York City

Do you find that when you travel to a place where you have a friend, it makes all the difference in the world?  We do.  We love having local people show us how they live, where they eat, where they shop and so on.  It's the best way to get to know the city intimately, don't you think?

This year we are starting a new feature called "Like a Local"--which essentially is the locals guide to the cities that they live in.

Our first "Like a Local" post is from Jennifer Dolan, who is the co-founder of Vellum New York.  Jen is one of the sweetest, most talented, kindest people we ever meet.  She is also super chic and super cool too.

Jen lives in New York and here are some of her favorite local haunts (some are in Paris and Chicago as well).

We hope you enjoy this new feature of our site.  If you would like to share with us your favorite haunts, please email us.  We would LOVE to hear from you.

In NYC I love scouring the 26th Street and Hells Kitchen flea markets for small trinkets, unusual vintage handbags, or unique pieces of furniture.

Santa Maria Novella is my favorite go-to for vanity waters. I cant get enough of their rose water. They produce wonderful waters and tonics for personal and home use and have amazing soaps that make great gifts. They have a product out-post in Lafco New York on Lafayette Street in Soho and have a gorgeous store on Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles. When in Florence, I always stop into the cloister portion of the famous Santa Maria Novella church where the products originated and have been made for centuries.

Distant Origin in Soho, NYC is good for interesting pieces of furniture with a modern spin (Lucite consoles, vanities, nesting tables, and fun ottomans). Ive also found fun glass accessories there like one of my favorites, a thinly-blown clear glass sea urchin that makes a great bud vase or taper candleholder. I love accessories with a bit of whimsy!

NYC has lots of great neighborhoods to get lost in, among the amazing stores in Nolita, positioned between the Lower East Side and Soho, is Polux Fleuriste, one of my favorite places for flowers. They make a simple or extravagant arrangement incorporating the most gorgeous buds and colors. Their tiny space on Mott Street houses every stem imaginable as well as gifts and cards with a personal touch. Stop off before a dinner party for a small bouquet or call in a congratulatory arrangement. Theyre tops at both.

McNally Robinson bookstore, a skip away from Polux Fleuriste on Prince Street in NYC, is a great source for the latest issue of Vogue, cool stationery, sentimental cards, or the perfect coffee table book. Im in here at least once a week.

Im a huge fan of vintage fashion and love browsing Daha on the Lower East Side of NYC for shoes, dresses, and handbags. Foley & Corinna on Stanton in the LES, a store of both new and vintage finds, is another favorite haunt for flirty dresses and fun jewelry (their necklaces as well as extensive selection of candles make great gifts). And of course Mayle in Nolita on Elizabeth Street, a favorite space for its cozy, comforting vibe with lush vintage-feeling clothes in rich fabrics and dense colors, tucked into a tiny space that smells headily of pomegranate.

In Chicago, Jayson Home and Garden is a wonderful resource for all categories (contemporary occasional furniture, outdoor plant life, cool accessories, hip lighting). I could spend all day here!

In Paris you cant beat the iconic Colette on Rue Saint-Honore for the most interestingly-curated, edgy selection of music, books, objects, fashion, cosmetics, and food, all under one roof. So inspiring. And then hop down the street a few blocks to the Hotel Costes for a cocktail and appetizer in the ivy-gilded atrium.

On my want, would-love-to-have-it list? A malachite bar cart with silver trim on the 7th floor home section of Bergdorf Goodman on 5th Ave. in NYC and an old-fashioned claw bathtub. Id fill it will all of those great bath salts from Santa Maria Novella!!

Five Adorable Side Tables

We have this thing for side tables.  They are so functional!  You can put them next to a reading chair, a chaise lounge, or between two occasional chairs.  They make a perfect place to set down a book and a drink.  They are small so it's easy to move them around.  Most of all, they are not too expensive, so you can swap them out whenever you feel like it.

Here are five of our favorites:

This one is from Global Views.  It's about $650.

This one is a new piece from Arteriors.  It's about $800.

This one is also from Arteriors.  It's $500.

This one is from Arteriors as well.  It's $700.

This one is a new one from Global Views.  It's $550. The top is marble.

We'll be putting these up on our site soon (sorry, we say that a lot, but we are just so DARN busy!).  Drop us a line if you need help with it.

Colorful Lamps from Bungalow 5

We've been browsing for pretty, colorful things for our spring catalog and we came accross these pretty lamps from Bungalow 5.  They are so colorful and bright, we thought you might like them too...

Here are some of our favorites:

These lamps run about $400-500 each.  Some of them come in different color options as well.

You can see the rest of the collection here.  We'll be posting these up on our site soon...

Affordable Luxury- Scented Candles, Chocolate Croissant & More...

We're a little bit blue today, mainly because it's the last day of a nice, long holiday vacation.  Tomorrow, ah, tomorrow we'll have to deal with work, bills and all the mundane tasks of life...

So we do what we usually do when we are feeling a little down:  Off to the farmers market for a chocolate croissant and a bunch of fresh flowers; then go home, light up some scented candles and crank up some music (try Pandora--it's free and it's fantastic!). Waste a couple of hours reading the Sunday NY Times and surf the web.

Let us tell you, never underestimate the power of a fresh chocolate croissant, especially if it is sold to you by a Frenchman from Paris!

Anyway, so here is our list of affordable luxury for today:

1) Votivo Scented Candles.  We tested several kinds of candles and we like Votivo the best. It has a clean, crisp scent, burn cleanly, and lasts like, 50 hours!  At $22 or so, that works out to be .44 cents per hour, not bad!  Our favorite is the Vanilla Grapefruit and Red Currant, but they have several other scents as well.  Stick with the basic candles though-they're better than the votives.

2) Surf the web for interesting blog.  One blog we really like is The Pioneer Woman--it was named one of the best 25 blogs by Time Magazine.  The blog is written by Ree Drummond, who lives in a farm, has four kids and married to a cowboy.  Her blog is about her life--cooking, home schooling etc.  It has a huge readership and very, very popular.  It's really quite amazing.  She would write a post on staying in her hotel room, with 20 pictures of the shower, the vanity, the door, the sink--you get the idea--and the post would have 200 comments on it!  Seriously!  As for us, we're lucky if we get one comment per post, and usually it's from someone who still thinks they can get link back that way.

We are so jealous!

We don't really identify with her life, but we  love the blog because it has lots of heart.  She comes off as some one very genuine, very sweet, and we love that.  In the time of mindless celebrity gossip and silly news, this blog is a gem to read.  Beautiful photography as well.

3) Going to the farmers market.  We love the farmers markets.  Not only the vegetables and fruits are much fresher than the groceries stores, we feel like we are helping the small vendors too.  It's really fun chatting with them and learn about their lives. In the age of Twitter and Facebook, we find it refreshing to just reach out and actually talk to someone in person. If you live in Los Angeles, here is a list of LA Farmers Markets.

All and all, we spent a total of $20 today--and the vegetables will last us at least three days!  So affordable and so worth it.

Have a great Sunday!

Spain Kitchens - kitchen cabinets

Spain Kitchens - kitchen cabinets

Nowadays there are a lot of black appliances in shops, which could be unnoticeable among black cabinets. If you will choose steal appliances anyway than you should also decorate cabinet doors by steel finish and then these appliances will be in harmony with other kitchen elements. Build-in LED lights could make your kitchen even more awesome and help you to create a striking atmosphere.

Martha Stewart Rugs for Safavieh

We're a bit obsessed with rugs lately. It's probably because we're working on launching our new rug site and that's all we been seeing for the last two weeks.

Have you seen the Martha Stewart rug collection for Safavieh? It's not a new collection--in fact, it's been around for a while. We're seeing some new patterns that we really like though. Check them out:

What do you think? They are so Martha Stewart-ist, aren't they? One thing you can say about Martha, she's consistent in her style/taste.

These rugs are not too expensive. They run about $250 for a 4x6 to $1500 for a 9x13.

To see the entire catalog of Martha Stewart rugs, you can click here.
