Building Less Than Meets the Eye

Wait...less, you say?  That's right.

In Builder Magazine's Business Update last week, they included an interview with Wayne discussing the design of the Warren Residence, an infill home and winner of the Best in the Midwest from the Best in American Living Awards, which offers eye-popping aesthetics while staying simple -- and affordable -- to build.

Best in the Midwest!

The International Builders' Show has proven to be a success as Visbeen Architects took home six awards in the 2012 Best in American Living Awards (BALA) by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), including the high honor of Best in the Midwest!

Our award-winners include...

On the Boards, Single-Family • Silver

“The BALA winners have always shown that they are at the forefront of innovative design, and this year is no different,” said Skip Howes, 2012 design committee chair and president of Scott Homes Ltd. in Woodland Park, Colo. “We are proud to recognize these companies and individuals for their creative and forward-thinking approaches to their work.”

Now in its 29thyear, BALA recognizes outstanding achievement by builders and design professionals in all sectors of the residential housing industry including single-family production, custom, rental, affordable, interiors, remodeling, community and international, based on the principle that good design is not, and should not be, limited to high-priced and/or custom homes.  Even the simplest, most affordable homes can receive an award if they showcase good design.

Award winners were announced during a ceremony on January 23, 2013 at the annual NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas.

Additional Information about the BALA program can be found at www.nahb.org/BALA, including the 2012 BALA Portfolio, featuring a review of design trends and scores of project photographs.

Grand Rapids Cosmopolitan Home: Space to Play

In their late summer issue from last month, Grand Rapids Cosmopolitan Home Magazine did a cover feature story on one of our designs, the Andover.  The homeowner said, about their experience designing a home with Visbeen Architects, "I met with Wayne to talk about what I had in mind and he took it from there.  He immediately started sketching while I talked, and eventually came up with this design.  He is truly an artist."  Check out the full story and photos of this great home with "space to play."

A job well done to the entire team that brought the design to life!

Also featured in this issue are the award-winners from the Spring Parade of Homes, including three of our designs; Pine Valley, Warren (architecture & interior architecture) & Eagles End (Meadowview) (hardscape architecture).

Warren

If you missed touring this award-winning design in person during the Spring Parade of Homes, do not fret.  Your pictorial tour is here!

Building a new home in an old neighborhood can present many challenges for an architect.  The Warren's design is a beautiful example of an exterior which blends with the surrounding structures, while the floor plan takes advantage of the available space.

A traditional façade, combining brick, shakes and wood trim enables the design to fit well in any early 20th century borough.  Copper accents and antique-inspired lanterns solidify the home's vintage appeal.

Despite the exterior throwback, the interior of the home offers the latest in amenities and layout.  Spacious dining, kitchen and hearth areas open to a comfortable back patio on the main level, while the upstairs offers a luxurious master suite and three guest bedrooms.
